According to the network, Todd had the information from multiple sources and ran with it live on MSNBC at 12:01 Saturday morning, nine hours before Romney's scheduled announcement in Norfolk, VA.
The report included accounts from NBC News campaign embeds who were live in Wisconsin, Virgina and other locales.
Todd, NBC News Political Director and Chief White House Correspondent, followed the announcement with a special report at 12:22 a.m. on NBC. He was joined by NBC News Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent Andrea Mitchell.
