We had some readers comment on last week's post that our reports of falling ratings for ABC's The Chew and Good Afternoon America were partly due to the Olympics. That may have been true, but their were no Olympics broadcasts last week, the week of August 13th, and The Chew and GAA continued to fail.
Don't forget, Monday, September 10th is the day Katie, Katie Couric's new talk show debuts on ABC. It will be on at 3 p.m. and General Hospital moves to 2.
It will be very interesting to see how that show impacts the rest of the daytime line-up, how GH fares in its new slot and if The Chew continues to slide. GH, by the way, is the lowest rated soap on the air in daytime. It draws just over two million viewers each week while the Bold & Beautiful has 3.1 million and Young and Restless has 4.3 million.
Last week, The Chew had 1.94 million viewers, 22% fewer than All My Children and on par with the previous week.
Good Afternoon America had 1.58 million, 44% fewer than One Life to Live and just a smidge more than the previous week's 1.42 million.
The View, though in repeats, did fairly well with 2.33 million viewers, just 4% less than this time last year, but down from 2.42 the previous week.
On CBS, The Talk drew 1.87 million people, down 6% from last year and a drop from the prior week's 1.98 million.
Here are the breakdowns for the various demographic groups (with
comparisons to last year in parentheses) most important to advertisers.
Women 25-54:
The View (ABC): 519,000 (-11)
The Talk (CBS): 446,000 (-12)
The Chew (ABC): 435,000 (-44)

The Chew (ABC): 126,000 (-27)
The Talk (CBS): 103,000 (-29)

The reason ABC is not doing well in the afternoon(other then GH)is because of the horrible shows they have on.The only thing anyone will watch is our soaps again, period.
ReplyDeleteWhat part of WE WANT OLTL BACK DON'T they understand?????
ReplyDeleteDebbie,
ReplyDeleteWhile we soapers appreciate more straight scoop, I do find several problems with your insinuation that GH is in trouble. First of all, nearly 2.5 million viewers is not "barely over 2 million". Next, GH gained over 100k viewers last week. And with all that being said, GH is STILL the top rated program for ABC Daytime. All this proves is what we've been saying all along-nothing less but daytime drama will cut it for ABC. Despite these quibbles, I/we appreciate you staying on top of things.
True, GH is doing fine considering the line-up, but there probably aren't enough viewers to change ABC's mind about the soap genre ioverall. More viewers would help.
DeleteSomething says, since GH is top rated daytime television program for ABC, they would look in another direction. I mean if they want to pull a show, pull with low rating and replace it will a program that has proven itself on the charts in the past.
DeleteGeneral Hospital has been on at 3pm for so long. I wish they would have kept it there. The Chew has better ratings than the Revolution and GAA. So I hope that will help. Just wish the Non-soap viewers who watch the Chew would give GH a chance.
DeleteEither way, AMC and OLTL will not be back. The cost of 5 day a week drama is just too much to with only 400,000 or more or less viewer difference. They may just do what they did at 4pm and 12:30PM and give it back to the affills.
I do wonder what the cost comparison would be if ABC put OLTL repeats starting from the first episode that still exist (around 1978)compared to new shows. As far as music COSTS for the 80's take them out.
I gave up daytime TV when ABC canceled All My Children.
ReplyDeleteWe Want OLTL not Katie or the Chew! GH is the only good thing left on ABC daytime!
ReplyDeleteKatie is gonna have alotta competition with Steve Harvey or Jeff Probst. What are the networks thinking???? too many talk shows saying the same f'in thing.... i like to watch Kelly Ripa and that is it!!!
DeleteFunny thing here in Orlando, the ABC affill channel 9 passed on Katie for Steve, Katie will be airing on the NBC channel after Days
DeleteBring back AMC and OLTL and ABC/D will see their rating soar ... morning, afternoon and night.
ReplyDeleteI am not surprised. I believe General Hospital will continue to do well at 2pm. I will continue watching! Thanks for keeping us informed...
ReplyDeleteMeee tooo!! I would watch GH at any time of the day or night!! :))
DeleteNot surprised, the non-soap shows on ABC stink.
ReplyDeleteI believe that General Hospital will do at least as well as it is now in the 2pm slot - but I hope their ratings keep increasing, every little bit helps! :)
agree. tooooo many talk shows on tv already, not to mention the new ones coming on NBC and CBS...... How much do people have to talk about on tv???? sick and tired of them all, except for Live with Kelly, she cracks me up every morning and keeps it fresh with her own spin!!
Deletei think it is high time that ABC starts counting all of the die-hard GH viewers that simply DVR the soap and watch it in a marathon run, like me on the weekends or late at night, since i can't wait to watch the next one!!! :)
ReplyDeleteI am not quite sure why GH is not rated higher than it is. The new team of Ron Carlivati and Frank Valentini are working magic on that show. I have watched GH for many years and am seeing a tremendous improvement in the writing. People are discussing storylines and can't wait to "tune in tomorrow". I hope ABC has the intelligence to keep this wonderful show on the air and I also hope that someone who respects our soaps will acquire the rights to both All My Children and One Life To Live when they become available.
ReplyDeleteWhile Team Cartini is doing a great job with GH, people are still holding, fairly or not, the Guza years against GH. That's not going to go away overnight. And add to that the GH'ers that never watched OLTL-then you have a dangerous mix. I'm not saying it's fair, it's just the way it is. To those skeptics I say, give the show another shot, you may just be surprised with what you see
DeleteWe need some out of the box thinking here. My suggestion, maybe some of you think is outlandish, but, ABC should consider bringing back AMC and OLTL maybe in 1/2 hour formats, and add in a couple of popular game shows into the mix. That formula worked well from the 60's to the 90's. Why not try it. Maybe a new Daytime Password or Match Game.

ReplyDeleteABC really needs to start thinking outside the box when it comes to daytime tv. They really don't understand the viewership. You are all right, leave the talk shows to syndication, not on ABC. What worked from the 60's to the 90's is Soaps and Game Shows and they should go back to that format. Bring back AMC and OLTL perhaps in 1/2 hour formats, and throw in a couple of popular game shows such as a new version of Password and Match Game. This type of formula will work. CBS has it right, soaps and game shows, except gid rid of The Talk.
