FOX Season Finales and Summer Series Announcement

FOX is announcing season finale dates and premiere dates for its summer programs, including new unscripted series DOES SOMEONE HAVE TO GO, the Season 10 premiere of SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE, the premiere of family comedy THE GOODWIN GAMES and the return of MASTERCHEF.

New unscripted workplace experiment DOES SOMEONE HAVE TO GO clocks in with a special preview Wednesday, May 15 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT), following the first night of the two-night season finale of AMERICAN IDOL (8:00-9:00 ET live/PT tape-delayed). In the series, which makes its time period premiere Thursday, May 23 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT), the boardroom doors get blown wide open when employees are given the power to make some tough decisions. Frustrated bosses will hand over the reins of their companies to the employees, offering their respective staffs a chance to make changes in the workplace – even if it means letting co-workers go. Each participating office will have its own set of issues, which will force them to take a hard look at what’s plaguing their workplace and answer the toughest question of all: DOES SOMEONE HAVE TO GO?

Returning for its 10th season, SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE waltzes into a new season Tuesday, May 14 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. The Emmy Award-nominated hit dance competition series will feature host Cat Deeley and resident judges Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy, as well as guest judges including actress Minnie Driver, actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson, comedian Wayne Brady, All-Star Stephen “tWitch” Boss and Adam Shankman, among others, at auditions in Austin, Boston, Detroit, Memphis and Los Angeles.  Each two-hour show will again feature breathtaking performances as well as suspenseful eliminations, as the contestants compete to be named America’s Favorite Dancers.

New comedy THE GOODWIN GAMES starts playing Monday, May 20 (8:30-9:00 PM), as part of a night of half-hour comedies, including encores of RAISING HOPE (8:00-8:30 PM ET/PT), NEW GIRL (9:00-9:30 PM ET/PT) and THE MINDY PROJECT (9:30-10:00 PM ET/PT). Starring Scott Foley (“Scandal,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Felicity”), Becki Newton (“Ugly Betty”) and T.J. Miller (“Our Idiot Brother,” “She’s Out Of My League”), the inventive family comedy tells the story of three estranged siblings who return home after the loss of their beloved father (guest star Beau Bridges, “My Name Is Earl”), and unexpectedly find themselves poised to inherit more than $20 million – if, and only if, they can adhere to their late father’s wishes.

MASTERCHEF debuts its fourth season with a two-hour season premiere on Wednesday, May 22 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT). After a nationwide search, the best home cooks in America arrive in Los Angeles to present their signature dishes to judges Gordon Ramsay, Joe Bastianich and Graham Elliot. The hopefuls whose dishes impress the judges the most will earn a coveted white apron and move onto the next round. Throughout the season, the judges will challenge the newest batch of contestants through a series of grueling challenges and elimination rounds to determine which home cook has the skill, drive and passion to make a mark in the culinary world and win a life-changing grand prize.

As previously announced, ANIMATION DOMINATION HIGH-DEF, FOX’s new alternative animated programming block, will premiere on air Saturday, July 27 (11:00 PM-12:30 AM ET/PT), with a number of new quarter-hour animated series, including AXE COP, based on the hit graphic novel; HIGH SCHOOL USA!, created by Dino Stamatopoulos (“Community”); the UNTITLED LUCAS BROTHERS PROJECT, from identical twin comedians Kenny and Keith Lucas (aka The Lucas Brothers); and GOLAN THE INSATIABLE, from Fox Digital Studio script writer Joshua Miller. Voice actors include Megan Mullally (“Children’s Hospital,” “Will & Grace”), Patton Oswalt (“Young Adult,” “Ratatouille”), Ken Marino (“Children’s Hospital,” “Party Down”), Vincent Kartheiser (“Mad Men”),  Mandy Moore (“Tangled”), among others.

Before summer, the following season finales will air: KITCHEN NIGHTMARES (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on Friday, April 5; TOUCH (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on Friday, April 26;  BONES (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) and THE FOLLOWING (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on Monday, April 29; the special one-hour season finale of COPS (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on Saturday, May 4; NEW GIRL (9:00-9:30 PM ET/PT) and THE MINDY PROJECT (9:30-10:00 PM ET/PT) on Tuesday, May 7; GLEE (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on Thursday, May 9; and AMERICAN IDOL’s two-night season finale on Wednesday, May 15 (8:00-9:00 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed) and Thursday, May 16 (8:00-10:07 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed). Oscars Draw a Big, Younger Crowd, but Doesn't Break Records

It may have been a critical bust, or something short of that, but the Oscars broadcast on Sunday night was a ratings winner.

With 19% more viewers than last year, the show drew 40.3 million viewers.  It had a 13.0 rating in the key audience group of 18-49-year-olds and was the most watched Oscars since 2010.

In short, Seth MacFarlane did what he was supposed to do.  He brought a younger audience into the fold.   I'm sure it didn't hurt either, that there were winner and nominees among the under 50 set as well, including such popular personalities as Ben Affleck, Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper.

It's possible MacFarlane may even be invited back again next year to host the Academy Awards.  The critics WERE somewhat harsh, but there were positive reviews as well and ratings are everything in the biz.

In adjusted numbers, Sunday night's Oscars ceremony drew 40.3 million total viewers, its largest audience since 2010, and grew to a 13.0 rating in the key 18-49 demographic, an 11-percent improvement in the demo over last year.
The show performed particularly strongly with younger viewers -- which was no doubt the goal when "Family Guy" boss Seth MacFarlane was tapped to host this year -- growing 20 percent over last year among viewers 18-34 to an 11.3 rating, its highest performance in that demo since 2007.
Jimmy Kimmel's post-Oscars show also improved over last year, growing 15 percent in total viewers with 5.8 million -- making it the most-watched post-Oscars episode ever of Jimmy Kimmel Live" -- and 9 percent in the demo with 2 million viewers 18-49.

The 85th Annual Academy Awards delivered a 12.1 rating/28 share in the key 18-49 demographic from 8:30-11 p.m., according to the early numbers. The show had 37 million viewers.
The telecast ran until midnight on the East Coast, so full numbers were not yet available. And numbers for live events often change slightly as more information rolls in.
Combined with red carpet coverage, which was up slightly from last year, ABC easily took first place in ratings with a 10.1/25 and in total viewers with 32.4 million.
Fox, which ran repeats throughout the night, drew second place in ratings and third in total viewers with a 1.3/3 and 2.9 million.
CBS took third place in ratings and second in total viewers with a 1.1/3 and 5.7 million. "The Amazing Race," which was the only show to offer competition to the Oscars in the way of original programming, fell off 28 percent from last week's season premiere, hitting a series low of 1.8/4 and took 6.8 million total viewers. The network aired reruns throughout the remainder of its primetime slate.
NBC, which ran repeats throughout the night, shared fourth place in ratings with Univision, taking a 0.8/2 and took fourth place outright in total viewers with 2.8 million, compared to Univision's 2.3 million.

Dancing with the "Stars" Announced for New Season

This season's Dancing with the Stars have been announced by ABC.  It's a slim list at best with the headliners being Andy Dick and Winona Judd.  Others are Dorothy Hamill, D.L. Hughley, Ingo Rademacher and Kellie Pickler.  The show starts with a two-hour season premiere  MONDAY, MARCH 18 (8:00-10:01 p.m., ET).

As announced this morning on ABC's "Good Morning America" by "Dancing" hosts Tom Bergeron and Brooke Burke-Charvet, the 11 celebrities, with their professional partners, (in alphabetical order) are:

ZENDAYA COLEMAN -- Multi-talented actress and singer Zendaya stars as Raquel "Rocky" Blue, one half of the comedic duo in the hit Disney Channel series "Shake It Up!," and is currently recording her debut album on Hollywood Records. Born September 1, 1996, in Oakland, California, Zendaya grew up as part of the California Shakespeare Theater in Orinda, where her mother works as the House Manager. In addition to training at the theater's student conservatory program and later performing in numerous stage productions, she helped her mom seat patrons and sell raffle tickets to benefit the theater. While attending the Oakland School for the Arts, Zendaya starred as Little Ti Moune in "Once on This Island" at the Berkley Playhouse, and in the breakout role of the male character Joe in "Caroline, or Change" at Palo Alto's TheaterWorks. She also studied at the CalShakes Conservatory program and at the American Conservatory Theater. Zendaya has performed around the world, including at the White House and in the 2011 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, and she tours select cities with her Z-Swagg Dancers and Singers. Her name is derived from the word that means "to give thanks" in Shona (a Bantu language native to the Shona people of Zimbabwe). Zendaya has been a fashion model for Macy's, Mervyns and Old Navy, and was also one of the back-up dancers in a Sears commercial featuring Disney Channel star Selena Gomez. She now resides in Los Angeles, California with her family and dog, a giant Schnauzer named Midnight. ZENDAYA partners with VAL CHMERKOVSKIY

ANDY DICK -- Andy Dick is an American comedian, actor, writer, director, musician and producer. Dick grew up in the Chicago area, where he was involved in numerous stage productions. During his senior year of high school, his love of performing proved decisive, as he was elected homecoming king. His first regular television role was on the short-lived but influential "Ben Stiller Show." Dick was a mainstay on network television from 1995-2006 on NBC's "NewsRadio" and ABC's "Less Than Perfect." In 2001 he wrote, directed, produced and starred in "The Andy Dick Show" for MTV. He has also starred in a number of feature films, including "In the Army Now," "Employee of the Month" and "The Hebrew Hammer." In addition he has made memorable appearances in feature films such as "Zoolander," "The Cable Guy," "Inspector Gadget," "Road Trip," "Dude, Where's My Car?," "Old School" and "Funny People." Most recently Dick has had guest appearances on NBC's "Community," FX's "Legit," the Netflix original series "Bad Samaritans" and CBS' "Two Broke Girls." He can regularly be seen performing at theaters and comedy clubs across the country. ANDY DICK joins first-time professional partner SHARNA BURGESS.

DOROTHY HAMILL -- Dorothy Hamill captured the Gold medal at the 1976 Winter Games in Innsbruck, Austria at the age of 19. Overnight she became one of those rare champions who transcends her sport and captures the country's imagination. Still, she has said she is most proud of her World Championship title in Gothenburg, Sweden, which followed her Olympic win; at the time, everyone advised her to retire from amateur competition, saying that even a second-place finish would tarnish the lustre of her Olympic Gold. Characteristically, once she had set her mind to it, she would not be dissuaded, and she won. As a professional Hamill has skated with many productions, including the Ice Capades for eight years.
