Will Katie Succeed with GH as lead-in? TV Columnist has an Opinion

Ed Martin of the MediaPost blog, TV Board, has a few wise thoughts on whether or not the new show, Katie, with Katie Couric will do well in ABC's 3 p.m. time slot this September.  Her talk show will follow General Hospital, which moves from 3 to 2.

According to Martin, there's little chance of great success for Katie, especially with younger audiences (women), since Katie Couric is no spring chicken herself.  He's also of the opinion that there's enough talk on the air and that a new chat offering will hardly make a ratings dent.  What he does say is that General Hospital has made a comeback of late, thanks to its new executive producer, Frank Valentini, who took emphasis away from the dark mob story lines and is attempting to bring the show back to its female-driven roots.

I agree.

You can read Martin's whole article, which also appeared in the Huffington Post, below.  You'll also note the many comments from readers, like those of this blog, who are vehemently opposed to more chatter and continue to demand the return of the cancelled soaps All My Children and One Life to Live.

  1. They think GH is the lead in but most are planning on turning it off as soon as GH is over. Looks like she is going for an older audience than the Revolution did. She will never last 4 decades or more like AMC & OLTL did. ABC do yourself a favor and stop trying to force your talk shows on viewers that do not want it. Return OLTL & AMC.

  2. Katie's show (or Ricki Lake's in my market) will not succeed for 1 reason: it is not OLTL/AMC. Viewers do NOT want another talk show. We will continue to watch and support GH till the cows come home...TV is off before & after. We sank the revolution & GAA; sorry Katie but your show is next....

  3. I will NEVER watch Katie, Ever since OLTL got canceled i have not WATCHED anything on ABC, so i Highly doubt that katie will last even a season and when that happens (because we all know it will) maybe then ABC will finally start gettin some common sense and Bring Back One Life to Live!

  5. Many soap fans have every intention of boycotting Hatie all across America by turning their TV sets OFF! The Hatie show is just one more of many examples of ABC/Disney disrespecting the wishes of its longtime, historically loyal, soap fans viewing audience. One Life to Live and All My Children Forever...Hatie and ABC/D are, tragically once again due to their rank arrogance and hubris, headed for a major FAIL.

  6. Other than GH, I will not watch ANYTHING on ABC any longer, daytime or nighttime. I am done with this network, there is plenty of other stuff to watch on TV. OR when I am missing AMC or OLTL I will watch DVD's I have recorded. Our stories gave us a reason to "come back", something to look forward to. We don't need any more talk shows showing us how to bake a cake, or boil noodles, or tell us how to dress! GOOD BYE ABC enjoy your dismal ratings!

  7. The rabid soap fans calling for the return of the now defunct AMC and OLTL are quite foolish. Those shows are dead and gone.
They arent coming back. As far as Katie goes, if she has a good show I will watch it. And if Dr. Phill and Ellen can succeed in daytime, so can Katie. I support Katie and I wont support the soap fans and their infantile boycott.

    1. Whoever calls himself Twinkmissionary is somewhat foolish. No they probably will not bring the soaps back and you can support Katie all you want. The point is she stands no chance at all and is not worth the 80 million that they are paying her. There is not a chance that Katie will make it and you will see that soon.

    2. Infantile, you say? Then would you care to tell us why this man, a marketing professional, is practically BEGGING ABC to return the soaps, and he's not the only professional to do so. Get your facts straight before you post.

  8. If Dr. Phill and Ellen can make it in Daytime so can Katie. The rabid soap fans need to get over it. AMC and OLTL were cancelled because they no longer bring in the revenue to justify their production cost.
ABC wants to move on and that's their right.
I wish Katie all the best and if she has a good show I will watch it.

    1. Get over it, you say-we have just begun to fight. We killed the Revolution, we're in the process of putting down GAA, and Katie will fail as well. We will kill anything ABC throws at us until AMC and OLTL are back in production. Don't believe us, hide and watch

  9. The only thing that will be watched in my home from ABC/Disney is General Hospital and Once Upon A Time until the soaps are returned... My home isn't interested in "reality" and talk shows - certainly not at the cost of scripted shows, and/or daytime soap operas.

Katie will have the same future as every other show ABC is throwing at the wall... none of them are going to stick until they start listening to their viewers.

  10. I won't be watching, I for one am FED UP with the parade of talk/reality/lifestyle type programming! It is all THE SAME! The same TIRED topics from the morning shows, it is ridiculous. Then they want to stamp these shows as "new & innovative", and they are not! The soaps may not have brought in the viewers that they thought that they should, but they HAD to be pulling more numbers than the replacement shows. None of these shows are doing well, because it is more of the same. So no, I will not be watching Katie, and I won't just "get over it". ABC doesn't care about their viewers, so I don't care about ABC.

  12. Soap fans are loyal. Once we watch General Hospital, we will turn the channel. We want our cancelled shows back.

  13. You couldn't bribe me enough to watch a commercial for Katie Couric, let alone tune in for her show. I don't care what time it's being aired, I'm not watching anything of ABC's except General Hospital. Soap operas have been a part of the American way of life, as is Mastepiece Theatre for Europe, for almost half a century. And you can't build that kind of a legacy without leaving a mark in the hearts and minds of millions of people. If you want "new" and "innovative" programming, give Agnes Nixon back her legal rights so she can continue to amaze and shock the world with the same stories that grab us by our eyes and make us sit on the edge of our seats. And should somebody decide to keep saying 'Get over it', I would like to make a seemingly simple suggestion as to what YOU can do with that phrase. But those of us SWANs know that Agnes Nixon wouldn't want us to lash out like rabid dogs. There's already been enough of that from Columbine, Virginia Tech, and just recently at a premiere of "The Dark Knight Rises".

    1. Red,

I love your passion, man. But, we in the soaper community need to stay away from the violent imagery as much as possible (as tough as that is, given our emotions), lest the rest of the world think we are the lunatics they say we are.

  14. I will not watch any talk show or reality show in a soap opera time slot. When General Hospital goes to the 2:00 time slot then 2:00 to 3:00 is the ONLY time that ABC/DISNEY will be allowed in my home. TOTAL BOYCOTT with the exception of General Hospital !!!! Sorry Katie but ABC screwed over the most loyal of audiences.....The Soap Opera Audience ! Wish you luck on another network BUT YOU HAVE ZERO SUPPORT HERE !

  15. No Katie..no ABC/D in my house except for GH. ABC needs to listen to it's soap viewers. No show will surpass all the yrs the AMC/OLTL was on. Bring them back.

  16. I don't think so. I won't be watching Katie. After GH I will be turning my TV off or to any another station. Katie might have made it had GH kept AMC and OLTL and put Katie in Oprah's old time slot with the lead in to 3 soaps. Honestly I stopped watching Oprah the last 3 years she was still on because I was just tired of talk shows.

  17. I will not be watching Katie or anything on ABC other than GH.

  18. I can answer that for you:) I PROMISE, Katie will not succeed unless ABC/D brings back AMC & OLTL:) Then and ONLY then will we CONSIDER leaving your crappy channell on at times other than GH:)

  19. Katie will NOT be appearing on my flatscreen. EVER. AMC and OLTL were axed with a poisonous cocktail of greed and propaganda. Those ABC brainiacs Fronz and Sweeney "cooked" up (i.e., THE CHEW) a scheme to serve cheap, superficial food fare and sophomoric self-help (THE REVOLUTION) via claims a new age in personal growth had begun. What resulted is a public hungry for more sumptuous servings of AMC and #1-ranked OLTL found the executive menus to be tasteless and undigestable. Katie Couric is more fodder for the garbage disposal.
