Ratings Decline of ABC's The Chew & Revolution Now Affecting The View

For those continuing to watch ratings for The Chew on ABC, there's little news, except where the network's other shows, particularly The View, are concerned.

During the week of May 21st, The Chew had 2.18 million viewers, just a smidge higher than the previous week's 2.13.  That's also well below last year's ratings for All My Children, which drew 2.40 million people.  The difference is 9% and, more significantly, a 21% decrease with women between 18 and 49.

The Revolution, now canceled and limping to its grave, had 1.31 million viewers, 47% below One Life to Live at the same time a year ago (2.50 million).

As mentioned, even the The View is now suffering due to ABC's poor programming decisions.  While it had 3.22 million viewers, the highest in daytime, there was a 13% decrease from last year and 16% fewer women 25-54 are watching.

The Talk on CBS, on the other hand, is narrowing the gap and has grown its audience 16 percent since last year, 17% among women 25-54.

Now ABC suits must be worried!

    1. Right on Jeannie! I never liked the View, even before ABC committed suicide by taking off our shows and replacing them with that drivel they call entertainment...YUCK My ONLY ABCD VIEWING IS GH, and if they take that off it will be forever GOODBYE ABCD, for me and my household!

    2. I will not watch Abc if they take GH off the air but I keep hearing GH will be gone in September

    3. GH has been renewed for another year, but is moving to 2pm EST so Katie Couric can have the 3pm slot.

    4. Uh oh lol....Another one of Katie's shows is going to go down too....Hmm ABC instead of taking the soaps off because of your personal dislikes of our shows has proven to be a BIG BIG MISTAKE. I wonder who will be in your jobs next year hmmm? hahahahaha!

    5. YES! Chew on that revolution ABC!

    6. GH wasn't renewed for another year. The renewal is only based on if ABC can't get another show to take it's place. If that Good Afternoon America show does well It will be more than likely that GH will be replaced with it.

    7. Chew on that Revolution ABC!

    8. LOVE it, Jeannie!! If they take GH off the air ABC will lose millions more viewers. I don't know what kind of people hey have working at the corporate division, they are NOT TV savvy. They don't belong there. They don't know what people really want in daytime TV!!

my feelings exactly! i was a total abc viewer, from good morning america through abc world news tonight... NO MORE! i've found other news channels that are better, and i do NOT need any more talk shows! BRING BACK OUR SOAPS or GIVE THE RIGHTS TO SOMEONE ELSE!

  5. ABC/Disney made a HUGE mistake cancelling One Life To Live and All My Children. It has affected their Primetime Ratings, as well as their Daytime ratings. Good Afternoon America will do as well as the Revolution, which is not good at all. They need to bring these shows back by popular demand, or release the rights so they can be seen on another channel.

  6. I watched CBS' "The Talk" today, and was struck with how much nicer, kinder, funny, and fun it was than The View. No harpies spreading their personal agendas, taking swipes at Middle America, and acting like everyone agrees with them. I totally enjoyed myself for an hour! The only thing I watch on ABC anymore is General Hospital, Castle, Body of Proof, Modern Family and Don't Trust the B in Apt. 23. Sometimes I watch DWTS, but mostly I'm not watching. Notice something about all the Primetime shows except Modern Family? Their stars ALL started out on SOAPS!

ABC BLEW IT, BUT THEY CAN STILL SALVAGE THEIR BLUNDER BEFORE THEIR AFFILIATES RIOT. Just reinstate AMC & OLTL, sell the rights back to Agnes Nixon, and watch the money and ratings increase. Simple!

    2. I'm only watching GH to prove to them they cannot disregard and disrespect the loyal soap fans, most of them are at an age where they have 40 plus years of viewing loyalty. We were their bread and butter for decades. They just threw us out like trash and replaced our shows with it. I will not give them one minute more than the hour of GH. You not proving anything by watching anything other than GH!

  7. Anyone notice that Hot in Cleveland has a better handle on this issue than ABC does? Wednesday's episode about restarting Victoria's defunct Soap online and including product placement was great! Yes, it was played for laughs, but there was a message there! WAKE UP ABC EXECS!

    7. ABC daytime programming stinks. I won't even watch our local news on ABC anymore. The soaps were the best shows they had. These morons that replaced them are so very boring. I now watch The Young and the Restless. Acting and writing, that's what I want. I don't need to hear nonsense and watch a cooking show. DUH! ABC has become a cheaply run station. I wouldn't be surprised if Goofy were the head of programming

    8. I was really upset they took AMC & OLTL off the air. I can't stand the chew at all. Mario is so gross, makes a huge mess and comes off as thinking he is the It Man. Wrong, I think he needs to go. Anyway they made a huge mistake taking away shows viewers had roughly 40 yrs vested in. Why not at least put them on the soap network? Isn't that what that channel is for? For god sakes. Give us our soaps back. I used to watch ABC all day long, now I hardly watch anymore.

  9. Hot in Cleveland is often a tongue-in-cheek love letter to soap fans, and I enjoy it very much.

Surely it is only a matter of time before ABC affiliates will begin speaking out. ABC has come in last behind both CBS & NBC in Daytime May Sweeps. As for Primetime in 18-49 for May Sweeps, ABC came in behind CBS, FOX, & NBC. Most embarrassing for ABC & all the broadcast networks is cable's Univision's soap/telenovela line-up dominance in the 18-34 demo for much of Sweeps. ABC being trounced in Sweeps will cost them dearly in future ad dollars. But what can a network excpect that literally told their most brand loyal viewers to hit the road when they canceled our beloved AMC & OLTL? We did what you asked, ABC, now deal with it.

No, ABC, we are no longer around to watch the crap in Daytime you, yourself told us was CHEAP, so we are not seeing your Primetime ads either...unless you have the good sense to air them during GH. Cancel The Chew along with The Revolution, and bring out soaps back!

  10. I stopped watching ABC except for it's soaps last April 11th when they cancelled AMC and OLTL. ABC is too proud and stubborn to reverse their colossal mistake of choosing reality talk show over quality scripted programming. I hope Rights to the soaps go to a production company and nework that values loyal viewers. as far as I am concerned, ABC can tank and bring down the Evil Mouse kingdom with it!

  11. ABC is trying to correct their mistake by placing Laura Wright on the Chew. Love Laura on GH. Will not watch her on the Chew. ABC need to acknowledge that a mistake was made and do something to recitfy the situation.

  25. ABC don't get it, they HAD something no other station had. Over many many years these soaps had followers of generations after generations. Sometimes the story was good, bad, happy or sad but we still followed. It was the only stations that was different, had the stories that made you want to tune in tomorrow. Yes, there might have been a decline in views but did they ever think that it was due to many woman having to go to work during hard times? Do they realize how many work places would tune in and have many woman gathered around to watch? Whats done is done, ABC is now a mediocre station that has shows that I can find on ANY other channel. There is nothing that makes them stand out or gives me reason to be a faithful viewer. If ABC cares about their viewers or their ratings they will bring back the soaps. If not they will continue to decline and be half the stations the others are...

  33. I agree with the rest of you! ABC/D made a HHHHUUUGGGEEEE mistake in cancelling our soaps! Yes, they may be cheaper to produce, but you get what you PAY for!! I bet the stars would have even taken a pay cut, if it meant staying on the air a while longer. Did you guys even TRY that, or did you just want to get those other 3 goofy a$$ shows on (KC included, because no one is going to watch her boring butt either, ESPECIALLY when you move GH to 2pm, and let her take THEIR SPOT, lol!) at ANY cost? Well, it seems the cost you paid, is the REST of your ABC viewership! I watch GH, and that's it! (Ok, I DO watch Shark Tank, but nothing else)

I hope you guys wise up before it's too late! It's just like the TV show "Las Vegas". They took it off the air after 5 years, because it TOO, was too expensive to produce, and for the last 2-3 years, it has been on TNT, and I think this is about the 50th run of reruns of the 5 seasons it was on the air. it must be doing ok, because they have't replaced it with anything, even though the shows have been seen over, and over, and over again! Take note DUMMIES!!!

I also don't think they realize, that EVERY show's ratings will be lower now, because of all of the different ways there are to watch programming. VCR, Tivo, The network's website, You Tube, DVD tv collections. People watch when it is convenient for THEM, not like in the old days, where you had to be sitting right there as it was being broadcast. Wake up networks!! Start thinking rationally, and realize that tv shows will NEVER have the ratings that they did before, because watching TV is not the SAME as it was before! DUH!!!!

You know what they say about paybacks, ABCD! Loved that article tap-dancing around the ratings, saying that even though NBC beat you out, you hadn't counted the numbers from other media sources, like your online site and DVRs. HMMMMM, perhaps if you & Nielsen hadn't cooked the numbers to justify your poor decision to cancel AMC & OLTL, you would have seen the truth: MANY more people watch soaps than you ever wanted to admit! Cheap = you get what you pay for. Hope your advertisers are happy at the few people who are actually watching this cheap garbage. 59. ABC should have realized that Soap fans are dedicated and actually have attention spans. ABC went after the reality show mind set crowd which has a short attention span. Meanwhile those of us watching our shows for years, some since their beginning, have been screwed by a network trying for cheap entertainment.

  60. ABC has found out the hard way that Soap fans are dedicated and actually have attention spans. They dropped us, some of us having watched the soaps since their beginning for fickle, short attention span viewers making cheap crappy reality TV. 62. Just because ABC doesn't get a million emails a day from Soap fans does't mean the Soap fans have given up the battle for the returns of AMC and OLTL. We Soap fans are just going to boycot ABC until they return the soaps or release the rights to someone that will air them. ABC has nothing on daytime I want to watch -- I record General Hospital so I can watch it in the evening. I do watch Castle in primetime but nothing else ( will not watch anything but GH and Castle on ABC) ---ABC has nothing to gain by hanging on to the rights to OLTL and AMC ---but they have everything to loose (viewers)

  63. On April 1, 1963 I was babysitting for a friend of my Mothers. That afternoon General Hospital aired for the first time. My Mom and I were hooked from then on and by the time One Life To Live aired in 1968 joining the ABC Daytime line-up of General Hospital and Dark Shadows,ABC was the station that remained on pretty much the whole day. In 1970 when All My Children joined the ABC afternoon quad of Daytime Dramas, ABC was then the only place to be. It is difficult to fathom why ABC won't honor the near five decade multi-million audience that it had with its soap viewers. A sponsor product buying audience like ours generated billions of ad dollars over that time. Just doesn't make any sense.

  64. P.S. I also think that it is a travesty that millions more soap viewers over the age of 54 are considered inconsequential in the ratings groups.

  65. First of all GH has NOT been renewed for another year. That's an assumption many are making but there has been NO word from ABC/D regarding General Hospital one way or the other. So many are concerned that if Good Afternoon America has any decent ratings at ALL, GH will be gone. Secondly, I'm DELIGHTED The View's ratings have slipped as well. Who does ABC/D think has been watching all these shows for years? SOAP VIEWERS that's who!!!! If The Talk is getting better ratings the suits are going to think it's because THAT'S the kind of show viewers want when in reality, people are only turning to them because there's nothing else worth watching...and frankly I don't find The Talk worthwhile either. BUT if people are turning to it and it gets the ratings ABC/D will decide that's what we want. Just turn your TV off during the soap time slots to send a real message.

    1. First of all, you are wrong about GH not being renewed. I can verify it too many other places-Twitter being one-I follow several GHers, including FV and RC-and trust me, they would know. Too many other entertainment websites have reported the same thing. Get your facts right before you post.

  66. I actually have started watching the Talk.....alot nicer than the view. Only thing I watch on ABC is GH and Castle. Sorry ABC you suck.

  67. ABC should be worried! Will not watch Good Afternoon America or Katie Curic. They need to keep General Hospital and bring back All My Children and One Life to Live!

  68. All I have to say to ABC/D is Karma baby. Since you canceled AMC and OLTL, the rest of your shows are taking a hit because of it. I really miss OLTL and they went and canceled it now you will see what happens when people stop watching your other shows. I'm glad the View is losing viewers!! Doesn't surprise me though because they all talk over each other that's one of the reasons I don't watch. The big reason well you can guess can't you? I really hope the Good Afternoon America will suffer the same fate as the Revolution has. I will not be watching at all.

  69. I doubt that the ratings decline is really a surprise to anyone in the TV industry. Viewers don't want and/or need any more talk, mediccal, reality, cooking or lifestyle shows; there is an abundance of them on other channels. IF ABC/D really wanted loyal viewers, they would have kept AMC and OLTL (and since there's no word on GH, possibly GH). They could have put them on Soapnet or left them on ABC. Instead they were short-sighted and foolish, and are paying the price for their arrogance.

  70. ABC is no longer the prime spot in our watching line up - I catch GH on Soapnet, but avoid even turning on ABC for anything else, except local news programming. I have not seen anything to indicate that the decision makers are will to own and correct their mistakes, so I will take my viewing pleasure on one of the other many channels out there.

  71. To quote Joy on SNL's View parody, "So What? Who Cares?" Nobody wants to watch talk in the afternoon. They want soaps! ABC was wise to pull the plug on "Puke-alution" since it couldn't attract a fraction of the OLTL audience. Now "Spew" is fading fast yet ABC is still promoting it (even when Laura Wright, GH's Carly, was a guest on an upcoming show). The fans are still here and are not giving up. We succeeded in keeping GH (at least for the next year) and will win the fight to bring AMC and OLTL back!

  72. SO happy to see some results from all the efforts we have given. The cancellation of AMC and OLTL even made the TV Guide Networks list of Top TV Blunders, Part 2! http://www.tvguide.com/news/biggest-tv-blunders-1035800.aspx#disqus_thread

  73. We won't give up the fight. I hope ABC execs cannot sleep at night and are realizing the error of their ways. I'm so used to the boycott now I will probably never go back and ABC used to be my favorite.

  74. I don't watch ABC daytime any more since they cancelled AMC and OLTL. Sounds like they are finally realizing what the ans knew all along, Cancel them and you go DOWN! I say bring back the soaps even in a half hour format.

  75. I'm still so immensely disappointed in all that ABC/D has done to our beloved soaps. This past December, in honor of the birthday of old Walt, I did a little video rant on YouTube...I still feel the same way now...if anyone's interested it's at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esEEqt7SUuM&feature=g-upl

  76. I usually don't take the time to comment more than once, but I had to deal with a reply before. Here is my real intended reply. It does my heart good to see all of ABC being affected by the cancellations of AMC and OLTL.

  77. My Grandmother and Aunts love to watch ABC's "All My Children" and have for years but I'm not much into day time TV (probably because I have a day time job), but I would like to see ABC's "666 Park Avenue". I have a lot going on at home when I get off so sometimes I don’t have time set my DVR timer for shows to record or I forget too. This is why I choose to call Dish and get their Hopper, because its PrimeTime Anytime feature automatically records all my prime time shows everyday in HD on CBS, NBC, FOX and ABC. My Dish co-worker mentioned to me that I can also skip my PrimeTime Anytime recorded commercials instead of just fast forwarding. This feature is called Auto Hop and you can use this feature from any room connected to the Hopper.

  78. I will NEVER, EVER watch any of the talk shows on ABC, and I would ask, in allegiance with all of the devastated soap viewers on CBS, that people DO NOT watch The Talk. The Talk replaced our beloved ATWT. Stick with other soap opera fans and BOYCOTT The Talk!! Together, we'll save ALL of our soaps!!

    ReplyDelete
  79. I used to LOVE The View! It was my lead in to AMC/OLTL and GH.............well, now we don't have that to worry about so, sorry, I'm not watching. I have no delusions that ABC/Disney plans to keep GH on the air nor bring back AMC or OLTL so I'll love GH while I can and once that's gone find another soap on another network to watch. Won't be the same but it won't be ABC..........

  80. we tried to warn you ABC:) now you are seeing first hand the power behind the fans of our soaps:)we told you last year upon hearing you were cancelling our soaps that by the time we were done ABC would stand for Already Been Cancelled:) all i can say is it's a good thing you still have General Hospital lol:)

    ReplyDelete
  81. I will continue to watch NBC until ABC starts airing our soaps again. i only watch General Hospital. no abc programming in my house!

  82. I agree with everyone on here, I will not watch anything on ABC except GH. I have also gotten my extended family on board as well. I will get everyone I know to boycott the ABC network until we get our soaps back. There are too many reality shows on t.v. already we don't need anymore. Sometimes people want to escape reality and have a little fantasy in their day and that is what the soaps gave us. Listen to the people and give us what we want. You will regret it if not.

  83. I hope ABC is learning a painful lesson. LEAVE THE SOAPS alone!!!!!!!!! Do not tell the audience what they should watch! Karma!

    ReplyDelete
  84. Don't watch The View. Gave me a Big Headache because it decides politically to their needs only what are Hot Topics. Very fake and phony. I wonder what will happen to the show when they stop giving free gifts to their audience. BRING THE SOAPS BACK.

  85. 1. ABC underestimated the viewers
    2. Replacement shows are terrible
    3. Katie AGAIN?
    4. More Good Morning whatever?
    5. THE VIEW is tired, stale and old! Replace it
with one of your "new" shows if you must air
    them.
    6. REPLACE "the powers" that ruined the daytime
    lineup
    7. Work on getting lost viewers back with good
programming. (I have given up on the soaps
returning, but do enjoy CBS shows now.)

  86. Dear ABC executives:

I really feel that you should submit to the demands and/or pleas from soap opera fans.If you're concerned for your viewers and your reputation then you also shouldn't rehire Brian Frons all because you're aware of the backlash you'll receive from AMC and OLTL fans.Just so that you know I consider Mr Frons an idiotic "know it all." In fact when I've seen his photos I feel that he has the face of a smug faced imbecile and it's his fault that there are viewers who disrespect him.

  87. “ABC Orders Cooking Show With Anthony Bourdain and Nigella Lawson”

WHY IN THE HELL WOULD ABC BE STUPID ENOUGH TO HIRE THESE TWO NIT WIT IMBECILES, WHO NO ONE WANTS TO SEE OR WATCH?! WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY DOING?

    UNBELIEVEABLE, JUST UNBELIEVABLE.

I HOPE THEY DON’T DO IT. WHAT A HUGE, HUGE MISTAKE!

THESE PEOPLE AT ABC ARE ABSOLUTE MORONS.

MAN, OH MAN. WHY WOULD THEY DO THIS KIND OF LOUSY SHOW AND HIRE THESE TWO IDIOTS, ESPECIALLY AFTER THEIR GOD AWFUL MESS AND DISASTEROUS SHOW “THE CHEW”, WHICH IS ONE OF THE WORST, IF NOT “THE” WORST SHOW ON ALL OF TV.

WOW, WHAT BRAINLESS MORONS THESE PEOPLE ARE. WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY THINKING?

CANT THEY COME UP WITH SOME NEW, FRESH, CREATIVE, AND EXCITING TV SHOWS, INSTEAD REHASING THE SAME OLD, TIRED, STALE, STAGNANT, USELESS, UNAPPEALING, CRAPPY ONE'S OVER AND OVER AGAIN?

TELL THEM PEOPLE. WRITE TO THEM. SEND IN THEM YOUR NEGATIVE LETTERS. FLOOD THEIR OFFICES AND TELL THEM NOT TO DO IT, THAT YOU, NOR ANYONE YOU KNOW WILL BE WATCHING IT.
    THEY’LL LISTEN TO YOU.

NO ONE WANTS TO SEE THIS. JUST TELL THEM TO READ ALL THE MESSAGES, COMMENTS, LETTERS, ETC., IN ALL THE FORUMS ONLINE, ON THE INTERNET, WEBSITES, BLOGS, ETC., AND THEY WILL SEE WHAT WE ALREADY KNOW.

THEY ARE MORONS IF THEY DO IT. IT’S A TOTAL WASTE OF TIME. YOU’LL SEE. WATCH. NO ONE WANT’S TO SEE THIS OR THEM AND NO ONE WILL WATCH EITHER. JUST YOU WAIT.

WE ARE IN THE FOOD BLOGGING AND FOOD BUSINESS AND WE KNOW A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO DON’T LIKE IT OR THEM.

BAD, BAD, BAD BUSINESS DECISION AND WE WILL BOYCOTT THEM AND ALL THE ADVERTISERS AND BUSINESSES WHO ADVERTISE WITH THEM IF THEY PURSUE THIS.

WE HAVE OVER 250,000 EMAIL ADDRESSES AND WE'RE GOING TO WARN AND ASK THEM ALL TO BOYCOTT THIS SHOW AND THEM, ALONG WITH THAT STUPID MORONIC SHOW "THE CHEW". BELIEVE ME WILL BOYCOTT THEM, AND THEY WILL CONTACT ALL THE PEOPLE THEY KNOW TO DO THE SAME. HOPE YOU WILL TOO?!!

LET’S PUT AN END TO REALLY BAD TV PROGRAMMING TOGETHER, ONCE AND FOR ALL. IF DO THEN WE WILL GET THE PROGRAMS WE WANT, MUCH BETTER PROGRAMS.

DON'T LET THEM DO IT! HELP US TO STOP THIS BEFORE IT HAPPENS. NO MORE CRAP!
