We lost out on seeing Eddie Murphy host the Oscars, which would have been excellent for the anticipation of whether or not he'd go off the reservation with shocking remarks. I'll miss seeing his trademark grin following something outreageous.
All the aftermath would have been fun, too. "He shouldn't have said that!" "How inappropriate!" "He should never host again!" All to be followed a year later by the announcement that he would, indeed, be back, mostly a result of the ratings and the ensuing buzz.
Well, we won't get Eddie Murphy, but we will have a similar scenario when Ricky Gervais returns to host the Golden Globes on January 15th, despite warnings from the naysayers. If you remember, Gervais' last turn included some pretty cutting remarks aimed at the very celebrities in the room and beyond.
In fact, following the announcement from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, Gervais tweeted the following: "Just told Billy
Crystal he'd better not use any of my holocaust or pedophile material at
The Oscars. He agreed (true)."
Gervais is no Eddie Murphy, but he does deliver - with both shock value and comedy.
