It was a holiday week, but even so, ratings for the ABC daytime lineup last week continued to erode - and the Nielsen ratings do not include the Fourth of July holiday.
For the week of July 2nd, ratings for The Chew, ABC's replacement for All My Children, slipped to 1.99 million. That's particularly bad news because that show has been drawing viewers in the 2.19 million range for a number of weeks.
The View had 3.11 million viewers, which represents a decrease of 16 % from one year ago while the CBS version, The Talk, had 2.02 million, a 7% decline, reversing an upward trend for that show.
The Revolution finally left the ABC airwaves.
This week it was replaced by Good Afternoon America. The new show on its first day, July 9th, drew 1.923 million total viewers and 359,000 women 18-49, according to Fast National Preliminary Nielsen data. That is certainly an improvement over The Revolution which was bringing in 1.23 million viewers per week, but the first day is hardly a real indication of what's to come. The one hour extension of Good Morning America will air for nine weeks until Katie with Katie Couric debuts.
Exactly what all of us predicted would happen at ABC. Just wish someone at Disney/ABC had listened to us. We still want our soaps back and if they want their viewers back, they had better take our advice. What kind of person would have a talk show called "Katie, with Katie Couric"? It sounds very narcissistic. Still NOT watching ABC with the sole exception of General Hospital.
ReplyDeleteDitto. Not watching ABC with the sole exception of General Hospital. Return our soaps if you want viewers to return.
DeleteI totally agree! Not watching ABC except GH, not watching Disney Channel or visiting Disney produced movies, or visiting their theme parks until Disney releases AMC and OLTL so we can watch elsewhere.
DeleteMy Family has also given up ABC and all things Disney did not renew our annual passes first time in 3 years. When ABC/Disney respects our viewing wishes then they will get my Bussiness back.I want my All My Children and One Life To Live back on T.V.
DeleteNot surprised by this. I banned ABC from my home after they cancelled AMC and watch only GH and nothing more. Put the AMC and OLTL back on and keep GH in it's current time slot and I'll be back.
DeleteNot surprising. Just wish ABC would admit their huge mistake in getting rid of AMC and OLTL! Then be smart enough to put them back on the air! You want fans, then prove it!
ReplyDeleteThank you for this article. ABC's ratings across the board are dropping What did they expect? They lost their daytime audience when they cancelled the soaps so no matter what they pur in those time slots they will fail....ABC your greed got the best of you and now your greed is taking out of your own pockets.
ReplyDeleteThank you again for covering this ratings story with ABC Daytime. It is a shame that ABC has not learned that more "talkers" are not what is in demand for potential daytime viewers. They had a solid, stable lineup with The View, All My Children, One Life to Live, and General Hospital. When something is not broken, you shouldn't tinker. I hope that what remains of daytime serial drama on ABC is not foolishly canceled to keep a spot for GAA.
ReplyDeleteStill doesn't matter to me what ABC puts on, still not watching except for General Hospital. I, along with so many other that I see posting, am so sick and tired of the parade of reality/talk/lifestyle type of shows!! There are way too many to count and it is ridiculous! None, and I repeat none of them offer ANYTHING new, it is the same tired topics repeated over and over from the morning shows! So no, ABC... I will not be watching any of what you have to offer except if you decide to bring our beloved shows back. That includes Katie Couric's show too.
ReplyDeleteGreat article AMC and OLTL and GH soap fans are united all we want is our soaps back . It's been proven that any shows replacing soaps will fail we ard not giving up. Looks like the other network soap replacement are declining on ratings as well. Please admit you were wrong and return or release our soaps thank you
ReplyDeleteWill not watch anything on ABC except GH. ABC you are going down. You have it in your power to turn this all around just give us what we want and thats are soaps back and we can help you with your ratings.
ReplyDeleteIt seems that ABC would see how much we miss our soaps and bring them back. It used to be I turned my TV on every morning to ABC, left it there all day practically, from GMA until 10 p.m. Not anymore. Now I only watch GH and The View. CBS has some really good shows. Thank goodness for The Young and The Restless.
ReplyDeleteI think the only people who might be surprised by this information are the executives at ABC who insisted that our soaps were not relevant anymore. The only show I watch on ABC, day or night, is General Hospital (which I LOVE!). Otherwise, my set is either on a different channel or off. ABC: Why do you think primetime shows like Duets and Glass House are suffering? It's because daytime viewers have left your network by the millions, and you can only do so many cross-promo commercial during GH. GAA will fail, as will Katie. Bring our shows back, and viewers will return.
ReplyDeleteMon. - Wed. GAA ratings mirrored early numbers for The Revolution - which premiered to a 1.9, and fell to a 1.5 by Day 3. At the time, these numbers were universally received as disappointing, and proved to be a signpost pointing to the abysmal performance the series went on to exhibit.
ReplyDeleteCertainly ABC expected a better showing than this for a spinoff of the mighty GMA!
After an initial press release on Tuesday, in which ABC attempted to spin GAA as an 'improvement' over The Revolution by comparing their GAA first-day numbers to an entire season of horrifically low ratings for The Revolution, they wisely decided to exclude GAA from the daytime press releases they traditionally send out each Thursday. There was no way they could do so without addressing the 12% dropoff in just two days.
The real story is that GAA couldn't do any better than The Revolution's premiere/early days - and in fact, on Wed. & Thurs., GAA has been a point behind The Revolution Day 3 & Day 4 in Household shares.
Great information. Thanks.
DeleteYou're welcome. Thanks for running this piece.
DeleteAnd this is why ABC took AMC and OLTL off the air? Makes no sense to me ..
ReplyDeleteI only watch General Hospital and Castle on ABC-- there was a time I didn't watch any network but ABC --that is not the case anymore - When ABC took OLTL off the air they lost me as a regular viewer.
ReplyDeleteGAA is another loser chat show. Ditto for Katie the Narcissist.
ReplyDeleteGH only on ABC.
Thanks for keeping us updated on the daytime ratings. I sincerely enjoy watching ABC's numbers fall! General Hospital is the only show getting my attention. They definitely need to rework the way they come up with their numbers. I don't believe it reflects the true viewership of soaps on daytime television.
ReplyDeleteABC the viewers have spoken and you need to listen. Bring back our soaps! You will only continue to FAIL in your greedy attempt to save money. Millions of viewers have don't have a Nielsen box so you ignore our voice. Well those that do have want your original Love In the Afternoon programming back!
ReplyDeleteHow much $$$us do you plan to waste putting crap on we will not watch? Bring back AMC &OLTL NOW!
...couldn't have heard better news!
ReplyDeleteI stopped watching The View the day OLTL went off the air. I used to be a daily viewer. I miss it, but the only time my TV tunes to ABC now is for GH. I hope ABC learns its lesson.
ReplyDeleteI want to thank ABC so much for giving me a chance to see whats on the other channels, by takeing off my daytime DRAMA which I have watched for over 30 years i never new what good shows were out there ! Thankst
ReplyDeleteSo why were the ratings for GH left off?
ReplyDeleteHere are the soap ratings for the week of July 2, courtesy of Soaps.com:
DeleteTotal Viewers
1. Y&R 4,505,000 (-38,000/-77,000)
2. B&B 3,115,000 (-223,000/+153,000)
3. DAYS 2,409,000 (+80,000/+139,000)
4. GH 2,242,000 (-35,000/-27,000)
Sorry Days but there is no way It got more viewers then GH,ABC you need to recount.
DeleteI as well have NO interest in anything ABC/Disney has to off except GH. I think many of us old time soap fans used to turn ABC on every morning and just let it run all day long...I know I sure did. Now I can't stomach the station even though I love the silly shows like The Bachelor and Modern Family and even the View. I will not watch because of the decision to take cancel OLTL and AMC. Sorry, ABC/Disney blew it big time!
ReplyDeleteThx for the continued info and updates. Still boycotting and will continue to do so ABCD except for GH.
ReplyDeletePersonally I think ABCD need hearing aids and need lessons in manners!
We have got to get GH's ratings to increase if there is to be any hope of resurrecting wither OLTL or AMC (or of keeping GH on the air much longer, for that matter!)
ReplyDeleteOther than that, the slide in ABC/Disney's daytime ratings is GREAT news!
I am astounded that ABC has yet to see the error of its ways in canceling AMC and OLTL. What more do you need to see how this was such a colossal mistake!! I have all the faith in the world that these two soaps will return to their rightful place. In the mean time ABC is dead to me except for General Hospital!
ReplyDeleteJust give us our shows back ABC and we'll give you your numbers back.
ReplyDeleteFinally! ABC execs are trying to figure out what's going on with the daytime ratings slipping. (Took long enough.) BRING BACK OUR SOAPS AND THE VIEWERS WILL RETURN!!!!!!!!!! That is all.
ReplyDeleteGive us back our shows ABC and we'll give you back your numbers.
ReplyDeleteAnd the people have spoken!!!!!
DeleteLMAO!!!!!!
@JRSMOM -- you are so right -- give us back our shows and we will come back to ABC
DeleteTalk show numbers may suck, but I hope GH's don't. I LOVE GENERAL HOSPITAL and don't want to lose it if ABC wipes the whole slate and tries to start over. It would be just like them to re-boot the whole afternoon next year. IF SO, just hope they keep GH and add back OLTL and/or AMC.
ReplyDeleteABC execs ruined ABC daytime. They forgot about the adults. Those of us that are happy with our lives and need an escape with guilty pleasure. The loyal fans who loved their soaps and were always there. The fans have screamed what they want and they aren't budging. We do not want more news, food shows, diets, dotor shows, etc. We want love in the afternoon and this screw up will go down in history as the biggest of all in television.
ReplyDeleteAND THIS IS HARD TO BELIEVE?? YOU PUT ON JUNK AND TAKE AWAY OUR LONG RUNNING SOAPS AND YOU EXPECT US TO WATCH THE NEW CRAP....NOT HAPPENING. BRING BACK OLTL AND I MIGHT WATCH ABC AGAIN UNTIL THEN NOPE....WON'T DO IT.
ReplyDeleteI only watch GH on ABC. My tv time is spent more at TNT than other network.
ReplyDeleteWe also do not watch except for GH until our OLTL and AMC comes back. And now after how many years they are changing GH time to 2:00 pm instead of 3 I will continue to watch GH I can record if im not home it is truely the best soap on tv.
ReplyDeleteI was a loyal ABC viewer since childhood. But for the last year I have given other networks a chance and I will not watch ABC daytime. I have turned to CBS, TBS and others. I was a huge fan of the View and now I haven't watched since. Good luck ABC. I miss AMC & OLTL
