The Chew Watch: ABC Daytime Ratings

Ratings for The Chew on ABC went down significantly during the week of April 30th.  Only 2.08 million viewers tuned in as opposed to 2.27 million viewers the previous week and 2.12 million the week before that.

Now, it's become very clear that All My Children was the better choice for ABC and that it made a big mistake by killing AMC and One Life to Live.  AMC was drawing 2.33 million viewers at this time last year.  That's an 11% difference and the margin keeps getting wider, especially since The Revolution has been cancelled.

Over at CBS, the news keeps getting better as a result.  The Talk, on at 2 pm, hit a two-month high during the week in question.  It drew 2.29 million viewers.  It's still not hitting the high mark of The View, which brings in 3.25 million.

Even though The Revolution is dead, it's worth noting that its audience plunged to 1.26 million during the week of April 30.  That's a whopping 49% below its predecessor and fan favorite One Life to Live.

  2. ABC please reconsider bringing back All My Children and One Life To Live! There are still millions of viewers that would watch faithfully as they have done for decades.

  3. ABC/D wanted out of "soaps" however, they have fallen into a dark hole. They thought they would save money by cutting out soaps from their daytime line up and but less expensive garbage on the air in it's place. They thought the soap fans would just continue to turn on their TV's at the same time everyday, to ABC/D and whatever was on at that time. They were so wrong. This is not the day's of TV when our only choice was to watch 4 or 5 stations. Most everyone has over 200 stations to watch as well as Internet and pay per view.

Rather than watch shows that soap views have no interest in, we went to watching re-runs of our beloved soaps on the internet. Even though we know the plot lines and how it is going to end, because they are repeats, we have become invest in the characters in these soaps. After all they have been part of our lives for over 40 years.

Sure a lot of u like a good cooking show once in a while, that is when we turn to the Food Network, and we like a good show that gives us ideas on how to be creative and we have channels like DIY and HGTV and a few others. Sometimes we even like to watch a good talk show, depending on the topic of the day. And, their are talk shows on just about 150 channels covering any topic of interest. Same with the interview/news style talk shows.

But, ABC/D's biggest problem is not what type of show they put on their daytime line up, it is that they canceled our soaps. Part of the fall out of that is a very large movement to BOYCOTT ALL ABC/D channels, no matter the type of shows they air, day or night.

The whole Prospect Park deal made matters even worse! We feel discounted and deceived! The only say we have is to show our discuss by BOYCOTTING ABC/D programs. By doing that and being vocal about it, sponsors will hopefully shy away from advertising on ABC/D, because no one is watching and because millions of fans are angry with ABC/D.

ABC/D said it has to watch its bottom line, well they can watch it fall! It is even more of a slap in the face to see that ABC/D keeps adding new untied dramas to their nighttime line up, which fail, when they could do damage control by even bringing back AMC and OLTL one night a week as a nighttime drama. They would have a built in viewership (after all we live in the world of Internet and DVR) and people make up their own line up and pick and choice what they are going to watch an when. Most of us watched our daytime soaps in the evening after we get home from work. ABC/D is so far behind the times and out of touch with what is left of their viewers and the way people watch their favorite shows. Basing their line ups on the Neilson ratings and cheep programs is not going to win their viewers back! Giving their viewers what they long for, their soaps, is the only damage control that will save ABC/D. Maybe, they should hire someone at ABC/D that understands viewers instead of numbers.

    1. I can only add- OH HELL YEAH! It's either that, or they will be unemployed like all those people they thought nothing of giving the axe to in order to try to line their pockets a little deeper. No viewers, no sponsors, no network, no jobs, no longer ABC. Anne Sweeney, and Bob Igler are going down one way, or another.

  7. If you don't fill the customer's needs and wants, the customer goes elsewhere. Never underestimate a customer (viewer) scorned! ABC and all disney networks have been blocked from my satellite receiver since 1/13/12, and they won't be unblocked until hell freezes over or One Life to Live goes back into production, whichever comes first!

  12. ABC needs to realize mistakes can be forgiven. Walmart made a BIG faux pas by eliminating the fabric/craft section. They said it wasn't bringing in enough $$. Well, guess what?? Walmart has brought back the fabric/craft section to their stores. The consumers are happy and so is Walmart.
ABC should take note and bring back our soaps

  13. Ratings are going down? I wouldn't be surprised if they are down overall. Soap viewers have united to boycott ABC/D except for the General Hospital hour. Perhaps it's time to bring back All My Children and one Life To Live?

  14. Who said something about putting OLTL in primetime is actually a very good idea. Look at the millions of built in viewers it would have. Susan Lucci's Devious Maids went down. ABC has absolutely no idea as to what to put on the air. I would never watch them again unless they bring at least one show back. GH is the only show that I watch on ABC and quite frankly, the best show they have. Go GH!! You are the best thanks to Frank and Ron.

  19. DUUUUUUH no one wants to watch a cooking show when they used to watch the exploits of the fabulous Erica and company!! WTH? Get rid of the stupid show the chew and bring back the soaps. And I'm not watching that insipid Katie "I know everything" Couric either.

  20. Something tells me they will smarten up & bring it all back to us soon. General Hospital is good, but really annoys me that they didn't give John & Natalie a proper break up on camera. No emotion connected to it. Storyline is reaching, but they will be able to come back from it once they bring back AMC & One Life....maybe make John & Natalie work through it, blah blah blah & all that business...All I can say is this...I've held tight to my promise to not watch a single ABC Daytime show except General Hospital...I even stopped watching the view (which I LOVED)because of the principal of the whole thing....let's hope all of the fans can keep it up and make ABC bring back the shows we really want to watch...

  21. Bring back AMC. These other shows are boring and can be seen on a number of other channels. I refuse to watch The Chew.I was hoping when it ended like it did, it would come back. Don't keep disappointing us ABC!
