American Idol returns for its 11th season on Wednesday, January 18, 8 pm, with auditions that night, the following night and on Sunday, January 22nd, 10 pm, just after the NFC Championship Game (football) on FOX.
The audition shows, taped in advance, take place in Savannah, Aspen, Galveston,
Pittsburgh, Portland, San Diego and St. Louis, which will go on through early February. They'll be followed by the "Hollywood Rounds,” airing in mid February.
On Wednesday, February 22, those who make it through to Hollywood compete in the “Performance Challenge” where they face the judges one last time before the top male and top female semifinalists are revealed the next night.
That's when the audience votes start to count and the competition continues with two nights of viewing each week until the finale during the May ratings sweeps.
