ABC Soap Fans Unite

Fans of the departed ABC soaps, All My Children and One LIfe to Live, and those trying to save General Hospital, have mounted a campaign to bring the canceled shows back.

The group, called Soap Fans United, was at the recent ABC affiliates meeting and distributed a flyer containing the following information.

The document has some interesting information:

1) ABC has lost 2.5 million ad impressions due to the loss of critical female viewers 18-49 who are no longer watching ABC from 1 to 3 in each weekday afternoon.

2) The loss of ABC daytime ratings is having an effect on local news broadcasts aired by the affiliates.

3) Forbes magazine media analyst Roger Friedman has taken ABC to task for dismantling its daytime lineup, comparing the debacle to "New Coke."  He urged ABC to go back to its original formula.

4) Within seven months of canceling ABC, the network surrendered its daytime dominance to CBS.

5) ABC primetime has also suffered due to the lack of lead-in audience from daytime through the evening hours.

  4. ABC/Disney made a HUGE mistake by cancelling One Life To Live and All My Children. Over 1,000,000 people have walked away from ABC Daytime. They need to restore Love in the Afternoon, or release the rights.

  5. I watched One Life to Live the entire time it was on the air followed by General Hospital. I now only watch ABC for one show and that is GH. Will never watch anything ABC but my soaps!! I am in my 60's and my loyalty to my shows should count somewhere!

    1. YOU ARE SO RIGHT WHY ABC/DISNEY THINKS WE WANT TO WATCH WHAT THEY THINK WE WANT(THEIR SHOWS) BOGGLES MY MIND. I WANT OLTL BACK AND AMC MAYBE ABC WOULD GET THEIR VIEWERS BACK IF THEY PUT THE SOAPS BACK

  6. Well I wonder where ABC went wrong, they claimed they had researched what the viewers wanted & there was no place for the soap genre anymore. I do believe if ABC would have at least compromised, instead of taking our beloved shows off, things might have been different. I do not watch anything on ABC but General Hospital & that is all that I will watch on that network. In my opinion, if the network doesn't care about what their viewers want then why should we care about the network? Restore the afternoon line up or release the rights

  8. Where did ABC go wrong? Well, they said that they had done the research & there was no place for the soap genre anymore...or so they said. I do believe that if ABC would have at least compromised instead of taking our beloved shows off, it might have been different. I do not watch anything on ABC but General Hospital. We have all (the soap fans) went above & beyond to show that soaps are still relevant but ABC doesn't seem to care. Restore the line-up as it was, or release the rights...it seems to be just that simple

  9. ABC made a huge mistake in canceling the two iconic soaps, which were on the air over 40 years each. I watch General Hospital now, and I love it, but I still miss All My Children and One Life to Live. If ABC isn't smart enough to want them, they should do the right thing and release the rights.

  10. Not only did ABC alienate their daytime viewer base which has lead to marked declines in their primetime ratings, they clearly did not make sound business decisions! Thank you for reporting the facts without the "Disney Magic" Spin.

  11. ABC followed the wrong person when they made the decision to cancel All My Children and One Life To Live. They won't be getting me to watch anything aside from General Hospital, as long as it remains. ABC needs to give up the rights they have to the other shows so that another station can bring them back. OR - do the right thing, cancel the junk they replaced our shows with, and bring them home again.

  12. The biggest mistake that ABC ever did was drop ALL MY CHILDREN and ONE LIFE TO LIVE. If not for GENERAL HOSPITAL, I'd never bother watching their daytime shows. ABC needs to wake up and smell the coffee. Either give up their rights to another company that will bring back our shows, or shut down that so called replacement (The Chew) and put our shows back where they belong. Show the viewers you really DO care about what we want. DO THE RIGHT THING!

  13. Thanks for jumping into the fray here. We've been at this over a year, and are NOT going away...

  14. Thanks for the article. I don't think it coincidence ABC Daytime has dropped 30% in the 18-49 demo without AMC & OLTL, and now ABC Primetime has come in last in that demo behind Fox, CBS, & NBC for the season. I haven't watched anything on ABC Primetime since 4/14/11. ABC is reaping what they have sown. I hope the ABC affiliates who are beginning to see the financial impact of their lost ad revenue will speak out as the NBC affiliates did several years ago.

  15. As a soap fan, I understand why ABC is tanking since it cancelled AMC and OLTL. They cultivated our viewership for over 40 years and then, tossed us away like yesterday's garbage. Reap what you sow ABC/Disney!

  16. I am a longtime All My Children Fan. I will not forget or forgive that ABC has cancelled my soap. I watch any station but ABC and are watching soaps that are on CBS and NBC. If General Hospital is cancelled I see even more viewers jumping ship.

  17. I only watch GH on ABC bring back AMC and OLTL.

  18. We warned ABC and Brian Frons not to cancel the soaps, but their beligerant attitude saying the soap genre was dying and self-help reality shows were in, made them turn their backs on soap viewers who were loyal for over 40 years. We warned them there would be hell to pay, but still they did not listen. With 30% of their viewership gone, do you think they are listening now??? I doubt they will resurrect our soaps, because too much damage has been done and most of the cast and crews are working other venues. However, the loss of OLTL and AMC is something that ABC Disney will pay heavily for the next 40 years...too bad ABC, the mouse house is dead to us!

Other than GH, I refuse to watch ANYTHING ABC! I have even gone as far as switching the 10 p.m. nightly news to another station. I had watched our local ABC nightly news for years, but I refuse to support ABC in any way, shape or form. There were other options, cutting the cast down, going back to half an hour, even three days a week... anything, but they chose to cut us off at the throat with this trash they call entertainment? Good bye ABC!

  21. ABC/Disney has failed it's daytime viewers as well as, it's Advertisers. Anne Sweeney and Bob Iger has told too many half truths. Time for the RIGHTS of these Shows to be given back to the phenomenal Ms. Agnes Nixon.

  22. As John McBain once said, 'It's kindof an old fashioned thing, but I like to see justice served.' Ever since April '11, I have seen the Disney name go downhill and closer to the dark side. And this is not what Walt Disney inspired with his creations. Sure, some of his cartoons had their scary moments, as seen on "Disney's Halloween Treat", but they always maintained the magic and a touch of family. I have yet to know whether or not AMC, OLTL, or even GH will be kept on their air. But I do know that I am a soap fan and I am nowhere near close to backing down from a fight.

  23. I'm no longer a viewer of ABC/Disney !! since they canceled AMC & OLTL !! Only show I watch is General Hospital !! Thats IT !!

  24. I haven't watched anything on ABC since AMC and OLTL were taken off the air, except for GH and I will continue to boycott ABC in this fashion until they bring back or sell the Soaps to someone that cares what we fans want to see on our TV.

  25. The only thing I watch on ABC is GH. I'm glad to see ABC going down the tubes. It serves them right for cancelling OLTL and AMC. They thought the soaps had bad ratings? Look again. Now they hould be understanding bad ratings.

And I think we boycotting soapers have put a nice dent in primetime viewing as well.

  26. I used to watch Abc from the time I woke up to the time I went to bed but no more I only watch GH now No more disney vacations for my family No Disney anything except GH in this household abc WILL crash and burn for there mistakes!!!

  27. I haven't had ABC on in my house all day since early April 2011. Then I decided I would keep it on 3 hours a day, then 2, now 1. NBC and CBS has my loyalty now, not only for daytime, but for news, primetime and weekends.

  28. I WATCHED AMC/OLTL AND GH FROM GET GO IM A 41 YEAR OLD FEMALE AND I BEEN WATCHING SOAPS PRACTICALLY MY WHOLE LIFE NOW WITH AMC AND OLTL NOT ON NOMORE I WATCHED ONLY GH BEFORE GH GOES ON I WATCH YOUNG AND RESTLESS AND BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL I WISH ABC WILL CONSIDER ON PUTTING THOSE TWO SOAPS BACK ON EVERYONE TALKS ABOUT MONEY THE COST OF IT BUT LOSING PEOPLE EVERYDAY AND NOT WATCHING SHOWS DAYTIME OR PRIMETIME ON THAT NETWORK ISNT THAT LOSING MONEY AND ALL

  29. Loyalty begets loyalty. ABC gave up on their soaps, and soap fans gave up on ABC. We have so many other options for entertainment, but ABC had a built in audience of decades worth of fans. Replacing soaps with "cheaper" to produce reality type shows just gave me the okay to turn the channel or even turn the tv off completely. I'm sure advertisers are happy to hear that.

  30. Great flyer...so true...ABC last on my list except for GH and that's due to Todd Manning being on there. Won't watch the chew, the revolution, Katie or the new replacements. Bring back One Life to Live!

  31. ABC/Disney: You treated us soapers like crap. Now you are reaping your "rewards"...more coming. Who's laughing now? Hahahahaha...Lmao...LOL..LOL..LOL..LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  32. abc underestimate the amount of loyal soap watcher's they tried something cheaper they thought would profit. but you cannot make money off something because its cheaper to produce. quality always prevails! and soaps are and will always be supported by millions of fans. you need to do a recount because i know they are not tallying up the real amount of viewers. abc get it right and keep soaps alive!

  33. I loved OLTL and joined the others and have boycotted ABC even local affiliate since OLTL went off air. I used to start my day with GMA and end with the local 10 o'clock news but no more. I love TnB and will watch GH as long as Todd Manning is there. They need to bring our most popular couples to GH and do everything in their power to keep GH on the air. GH needs Todd and Blair Manning.

  34. No AMC, OLTL...No ABC!!! I only watch GH on Ch. 10. There night line-up seem interesting, but I have been able to resist. Let's continue to hold it down. No to ABC!!! No to ABC!!
